methodology for marriage preparation.

- Modern
NFP is a scientific method of observing times of fertility
and infertility by following changes in a woman's body.
- Men
are always fertile.
- Women
are only fertile for about 5-9 days each cycle. This is
when cervical mucous is present and when the egg is released.
- Hormonal
Contraceptives work to prevent pregnancy via three mechanisms:
- Prevention
of Ovulation.
- Thickening
of cervical mucous which prevents sperm transport.
- Prevention
of implantation. This means that if an egg is released and
fertilized it is less able to implant and grow due to hormonal
effects on the lining of the wall of the uterus. This leads
to an abortion.
- Side
Effects of hormonal contraception include weight gain, acne,
depression, irregular bleeding and, on rare occasions, hypertension,
stroke heart attack and blood clot.
- Methods
of Natural Family Planning (NFP):
- Ovulation
Method: This relies on characteristic changes in the cervical
mucus, which determines the day of ovulation, +/- 2 days
with 95% accuracy.
- Sympto-thermal
Method: This method uses changes in cervical mucus as well
as basal body temperatures and internal cervix exams to
determine the time of fertility.
- Effectiveness:
Both methods are equal in effectiveness to birth control
pills at postponing pregnancy. They are also very helpful
for achieving pregnancy because they so accurately determine
the fertile time.
