When it was first suggested that we pray together, we were both actually uncomfortable with that concept. Pray? Together? As a newly engaged couple, our own individual prayer lives were still very young, let alone developing a prayer life together! But we heard the statistics, we knew it was the right thing to do, and we wanted our marriage to last. We asked the Holy Spirit to guide us, and so we tried.
The first time was somewhat uncomfortable...we held hands, looked away, and said a quick Hail Mary. Exhale! It was okay! We survived. Eventually, we built up to saying the entire rosary together. As we were married, our evening prayers became more flowing and were easier. We would read from the Bible.
Before we knew it, our prayer life together was amazing. We began talking together more about our faith. We attended Mass with greater fervor; we started taking yearly retreats together; we attended Catholic talks and conferences; we became involved in pro-life, pro-family and pro-Catholic groups; we truly began learning more about our beautiful, rich Catholic faith...and we are still learning!
We firmly believe prayer has saved our marriage from all the evils that attempt to extinguish it. It has enriched our lives and the lives of our children! If a husband and wife can humble themselves before God in prayer, then they can peacefully work together to solve any crisis or problem that will arise. The "little things" won't get to you as much any more.
Through prayer you will have more patience and charity toward your spouse. Through prayer you will learn of God's love and mercy. Through prayer your life together will have greater peace. Prayer will enrich your lives. Prayer will awaken you to the beautiful gift God has given to you in our precious Catholic faith and will keep the faith alive in your hearts for your long, glorious life together.
