In the fall of 1915 families felt the need for a new parish to serve the
Powderhorn Park community. Archbishop Ireland granted their
request and Holy Name was founded on July 5, 1916. The first Mass in
the new church was celebrated on December 5, 1916 and Holy Name was
blessed by Archbishop Ireland on January 21, 1917.
The school was erected in 1923 and staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph (who would remain until
1978). A building fund for a new church was created in the early 1930s but in March 1940 bids
were set aside because of the coming world war. From 1953-1957, work was done to plan and
complete both a school addition and convent building.

In 1959, a committee was formed for developing the new church. The design was by Thompson
and the architects were Cerny Associates. The ground was broken on October 9, 1960. The first
Mass was held on March 11, 1962, and Archbishop Leo Binz blessed the church on April 29, 1962.
Office remodeling was done in 1991 and in 1993, and the school became part of a five-parish
consolidation named Risen Christ School. Since then, the convent has been converted to a
child-care center, a lift has been added between the worship space and social hall and the
three bells over the church doors have been repaired and reinstalled.
Holy Name seeks to serve the community as welcoming, engaged and passionate disciples of
Christ and be a place where God’s love is abundantly present.
