In 1908, a group of Catholics living in Prior Lake acquired an abandoned
church that had been dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel at nearby
Spring Lake. They moved it across the frozen lake, using a team of horses,
to Prior Lake. The new parish was officially incorporated in 1912. For
many years they shared a priest with St. Peter in Credit River.
On Easter Sunday 1921, the old church that had crossed the lake burned
down. By Christmas of that year, a new brick church had been built. This
building served the community for many years until they had outgrown it.
A new church was completed in 1986. The School Sisters of Notre Dame
came to St. Michael in 1959 to start the parish school.
Today, St. Michael has a partnership with Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Parish in Chimbote, Peru.
