Sacred Heart in Robbinsdale was established as a parish in September
1911 with territory taken from Ascension in Minneapolis. The
original church, a white wooden frame church, held the first Mass for
Christmas midnight Mass. The church was enlarged and covered in
brick in the 1920s by Fr. William Blum, pastor from 1912-1930, who
also oversaw the building of the school and convent in 1926 and 1927.
The present church, made of Mankato stone, was completed in 1958
during the pastorate of Fr. Francis Nolan and opened in time for
Christmas midnight Mass. The old church was destroyed by fire in 1973
after being used as an activities center for the community. In 1974,
during the pastorate of Fr. Wallace Hermes, a new activities center
with multi-purpose rooms, a gym, and parish office opened. A new
rectory was built in 1982 during the pastorate of Fr. John McGrath.
In 2012 an addition uniting the church, school, and activities center with a parish gathering
space, elevator, and new classrooms was built during the pastorate of Fr. Bryan J.B. Pedersen.
Today, Sacred Heart strives to foster a community of disciples in response to the Gospel of
Jesus Christ through worship, fellowship, Catholic education and service.
