Hora de finalización: 8 p.m.

Marginalized survivor stories from the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean will be featured in this presentation. These stories will highlight the colonial theology and colonial concepts of God that often perpetuate the abuse suffered by those in the Global South and those who are on the peripheries. Little data exists for good reasons. Although reports of clergy abuse in the Caribbean are less publicized than in other regions, documented cases and systemic factors demonstrate that abuse occurs there and is largely underreported. The relative silence on the issue is a complex problem rooted in cultural attitudes toward authority, institutional practices, and a lack of media scrutiny.

Fr. Gerard (Jerry) J. McGlone, S.J., Ph.D. is a Jesuit priest and Research Fellow at Georgetown University’s Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs in Washington, DC, where he leads a project on Towards a Global Culture of Safeguarding. He is a survivor of clergy sexual abuse. He is the lead consultant to the Samaritan Movement and the Office of Ministry in Trauma Services of the Archdiocese of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. He consults regularly with dioceses throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. He has been at the forefront in designing, researching, and implementing evidenced-based child abuse prevention programming, trauma-informed education, and inter-cultural seminary assessment and formation programming.
