Annunciation dates back to 1863, when the first church was built in Hazelwood as a mission of St. Dominic in Northfield, about ten miles away. This building served the community until 1913, when it was destroyed by fire. The present church was completed in 1914. A rectory was built in 1942 and a social hall in 1989.
This small country church now stands immediately to the east of I-35. The blinking light in its
bell tower is a local landmark, and Annunciation is often referred to as “the Catholic church
on the hill.” The parish cemetery dates back to the early days of the parish.
