In 1856, J. Joseph Fox walked to Saint Paul to ask Bishop Cretin for a Catholic priest to baptize area children, hear confessions and distribute Holy Communion. St. Joseph’s church of Douglas was founded in the spring of 1873 as a mission of St. Boniface Parish in Hastings by Bishop Grace. The Reverend George Scherer O.S.B. was the first pastor and came to Miesville every second Sunday. In 1882 the parish was incorporated, with priests continuing to come from Hastings and eventually New Trier. The original church was built in 1873 and torn down in 1908. The present church was erected in 1907, but struck by lightening and caught fire on August 27, 1913. All that remained from the fire were the brick walls. The church was rebuilt and dedicated October 25, 1914.
People are drawn to our parish because of our beautiful church, the small town atmosphere and most importantly the Celebration of the Mass in English and the Traditional Latin Mass. A parish hall was added in 2002, which has been home to many parish community gatherings. The parish is thriving with many young families and folks that have descendants from the early settlers.
