As Governor Walz considers calling a special session of the Minnesota Legislature, and lawmakers deliberate possible solutions, the Minnesota Catholic Conference, in collaboration with other religious communities and school advocates, proposes strengthening the Safe Schools Program by creating a consistent school safety funding stream of $100 per student for all students, irrespective of where they attend school—public, charter, nonpublic, or tribal.

In the wake of the terrible shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church and School, which claimed the lives of two beautiful children, people are asking, “How did this happen?” and “How can we prevent further tragedies like this one?”
Unfortunately, mass shootings often target children in schools. Undoubtedly, we need to engage in hard debates about access to certain types of guns and ammunition. In addition, we need to look at some of the spiritual and mental health crises that are affecting young people today. We must absolutely unite as a community to enhance the protection of all children in schools as a matter of public safety.
Contact Governor Walz and legislators today! Urge legislators to support a special session that provides funding for enhanced school safety measures that protect all students.
