Ars Celebrandi: The Art of Celebrating the Mass

Ars celebrandi, a Latin phrase meaning “the art of celebrating,” refers to the reverent, prayerful, and faithful celebration of the Church’s liturgy. More than simply carrying out liturgical roles correctly, ars celebrandi is the way clergy, musicians, lectors, ministers, and all the lay faithful participate in the sacred mysteries so that Christ is encountered. The Archdiocesan Ars Celebrandi Workshops seek to strengthen this ministry of service by helping those who lead and participate in the liturgy celebrate the Mass with dignity, devotion and hospitality.

The importance of this work is highlighted in Archbishop Bernard Hebda’s pastoral letter, You Will Be My Witnesses: Gathered and Sent From the Upper Room. In the second year of the archdiocesan Synod implementation, the focus was placed on the Mass, recognizing the Eucharist as the source from which the Church draws its life and mission. Archbishop Hebda speaks of the beauty, form and meaning of the Mass, emphasizing that vibrant parish life and authentic evangelization flow from a deeper encounter with Jesus Christ in the liturgy.

As we gather to worship, the liturgy forms us as disciples, unites us as the Body of Christ, and sends us forth as witnesses to the Gospel. By cultivating a deeper ars celebrandi, we help prepare celebrations of the Mass that invite all people into prayer, foster active participation, and reveal the beauty of God’s saving presence among us. These resources are offered to support that mission and to help every liturgical minister serve with confidence, fidelity and joy.
