How to Join the Church

Ready to learn more about Jesus and the Church he founded, or considering joining the Catholic Church? You’ll be joining 1.2 billion Catholic sisters and brothers throughout the world! Here’s how:

  1. Find a local parish. This is the community through which you’ll learn more about the Catholic faith, have opportunities to encounter Christ, and prepare to join in full communion with the Church.
  2. Ask about the OCIA program. OCIA stands for “Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, and it’s a path where, throughout the year (fall to spring), one can learn about the Catholic faith, prepare for and receive the sacraments. Our Lord instituted the sacraments, which are outward signs of an inward grace, and there are seven in all. The OCIA process includes receiving the sacrament of reconciliation (also called penance), and then at Easter Vigil, receiving the sacraments of initiation: baptism (for those who have not yet been baptized), confirmation and holy Communion.
  3. Wondering about baptism or other sacraments for children? While OCIA is for adults, your parish can also share how children and youth who have not yet been baptized or received first Communion may prepare for receiving the sacraments.
