The present Our Lady of Mount Carmel church was built in 1908 by the United
Brethren. In 1938, the church was purchased for the Italian community of
Northeast Minneapolis, to replace an earlier church. Father Lawrence Malley was
appointed pastor, a post he would retain for thirty-nine years.
For many years, Our Lady of Mount Carmel was the spiritual home of the Italian
community. This changed after I35-W was constructed, cutting right through the
Beltrami neighborhood. Membership declined until 1986, when the parish found
a new purpose as the home for the Catholic Deaf community.
