Nativity of Our Lord was established in 1922. Masses were said at the nearby College of
St. Catherine until the combined church and school was built. The present Gothic style
granite church was completed in 1939. Nativity School was originally staffed by the Sisters of
St. Joseph of Carondelet. Gradually, lay faculty took over. The school continues to thrive today,
with more than 700 students enrolled in preschool through 8th grade.
In 2022, the parish marked its centennial with a major capital campaign to restore the church
building, eliminate school debt, and establish a scholarship endowment for the school.
Steiner Hall on the campus of Nativity is named for Msgr. Clarence Steiner, who was first
assigned to Nativity as an assistant in 1945. He became pastor in 1964, and after his retirement
in 1986, continued on in residence until 1998—a total of 52 years in the parish.
