In February 1949 Maternity of Mary was established, and the first Mass was celebrated in the basement of a parishioner’s home. By April 1949, a temporary “barracks” church had been built. In August of that same year, ground was broken for a parish church, school, and rectory. The first Mass was offered in the church basement on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1950. The school opened on September 5 of that year. Ground was broken for a permanent church in 1961 and the following year the new church was dedicated. Built in a modern Romanesque style, the church is constructed of native dolomite sandstone from Mankato to evoke Noah’s Ark. 144 stained glass “clerestory” windows adorn the sides of the church, while a large “Rose Window” depicts the Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary through the Joyful Mysteries of the rosary. Historic stained glass windows and statues from St. Andrew (Maternity’s founding parish), decorate Holy Family Chapel and the main church. Six new statues were commissioned to honor Mary’s maternity—four saints with great devotion to Our Lady, Our Lady with child, and Our Lady of Joy. A striking 113-foot bell tower above the baptistery is a local landmark.
