Monday, Dec. 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, is a Holy Day of Obligation.
Mass on Sunday evening, Dec. 7, will be celebrated as the Second Sunday of Advent. However, attending Mass that evening may fulfill the obligation for the Immaculate Conception, even though the liturgy is an Advent Sunday—provided that one has already attended an earlier Mass for the Second Sunday of Advent. Attending one Mass Sunday evening does not “count” to fulfill both obligations; there are two distinct liturgical realities (Sunday and our national patronal day), so two Masses are required.
So, make sure to go to Mass twice, once for the Second Sunday of Advent on either Saturday night or Sunday and once for the Immaculate Conception, either Sunday night or Monday. Find a parish aquí. (Please note that parishes may offer special Mass times for holy days.)
