Ascension in north Minneapolis was established in 1890, and Fr. Alexander Christie was appointed its first pastor. The present building, in Gothic Revival style, was built in 1901, while the old church served as a parish hall. Ascension School was built in 1927 and a convent for the Sisters of St. Joseph was built in 1948. Since its founding in 1890, Ascension has served as a place of sanctuary and celebration for the people of North Minneapolis. Just as the community welcomed Irish immigrants more than 100 years ago, today the diverse congregation welcomes the peoples of Latin America, Africa, South Asia, and just about everywhere else in the world, while remaining home to the people who have worshiped here for generations. Throughout its history, Ascension School has served as both a reflection of its community and as an instrument for change on the North Side of Minneapolis, helping move lives forward through education and spiritual formation. Today, all are welcome at Ascension School without regard to academic level, home situations, language skills, religious beliefs, or financial resources.
