Originally known as Immaculate Heart of Mary in Glen Lake, the first Mass was offered
in July 1946 in a Quonset hut. A parish school opened in 1952, under the direction of the
Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. A permanent church building was
completed in 1959.
In 1970, the school became part of the John Ireland Consolidated School, with
the schools of St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph, Hopkins. Immaculate
Heart of Mary re-established a pre-K through 8th grade school known as
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School in 2004, which merged with St.
John the Evangelist in Hopkins to form Notre Dame Academy (a regional
school) in 2013, located on the Immaculate Heart of Mary campus.
In response to the growth in the area, a large new church and
campus was created in 2000. The new church, with seating for 950
people, included a custom-made icon of the Immaculate Heart
of Mary mounted on the only remaining marble wall from the
original church. A renovation was completed in 2015 with the
addition of a marble altar, ambo, tabernacle stand and baptismal
font, stained glass and the return of the original, restored crucifix
above the altar. As part of the 75th Anniversary celebration in 2021,
an outside reflection area including a statue of Mary was blessed
by Archbishop Bernard Hebda.
