Sacred Heart was founded as a German-speaking parish in 1881.
From 1909 until 2016, it was led by Franciscan priests. For many
years, the School Sisters of Notre Dame staffed the school.
In the 1990s, Sacred Heart began to host the Archdiocese’s
Spanish-language ministry for the Latino community on
the East Side. After several years of sharing space, the two
communities—Anglo and Latino—joined to become one parish
community at Pentecost 1997. Back in 1881, Sacred Heart
parishioners greeted one another with “Guten Morgen!” Later
it was “Good Morning!” and today also say “¡Buenos Dias!”
