Nestled amid the fields in a lovely country setting is “the little Polish church,” St. Mary
of Czestochowa. The mission was established in 1883, attached to St. Peter in Delano,
and the first white frame church was built the following year. Eventually, in 1904, it became
a mission of St. Joseph’s in Delano which was completed at that time. In 1913, the church was
struck by lightning and burned to the ground. The present church was built, and the first Mass
and dedication were on January 17, 1915. In the fall of 1947, a parish house (which was built
just south of the church) was blessed and the pastor moved in.
Today, St. Mary continues to thrive. While it is no longer predominantly Polish, many
parishioners can still trace their roots to the original founding families.
