In 1886, German Catholic immigrants founded St. Matthew to serve a growing population on St. Paulโs West Side. The original church building burned in 1968, and a new church was dedicated in 1970.
During the second half of the 20th century, St. Matthew emerged as a strong, urban, Catholic community engaged in the worship of God and the service of neighbor. Under the visionary leadership of Fr. Stephen Adrian for 43 yearsโalong with committed parish members, staff and other pastorsโthe parish developed multiple ministries that promote social justice, support community needs, and honor the teachings of the Second Vatican Council. Children have always been at the center of St. Matthewโs mission. In 2012, St. Matthew School joined with other schools to form Community of Saints Regional Catholic School.
