The first Mass in Osseo took place in 1855 in the home of Pierre Bottineau. The presider was Fr. George Keller, a German priest from St. Paul. One hundred families were present! The pioneers of Osseo clearly needed a church of their own. The first church, which was named in honor of St. Louis, was completed in 1856. It had the distinction of being the first Catholic church built in Hennepin County west of the Mississippi River. The second church was built in 1864 and received a new name: St. Vincent de Paul. As the community continued to grow, the sanctuary was enlarged in 1880, and a steeple was added in 1890. The third church was built in 1921, and a school followed in 1952. The current church was dedicated on June 10, 1989. As a special memorial to the first patron of the parish, the chapel in the present church is dedicated to St. Louis. Today, St. Vincent de Paul is composed of roughly 2,900 households, around 10,000 people who come from Osseo, Maple Grove, Brooklyn Park, Champlin and Dayton.
