The history of Holy Cross is as multifaceted as its neighborhood.
Since a merger in 2013, the parish traces its roots back to
St. Anthony of Padua founded in 1849 as the first Catholic parish
of Minneapolis. As growing numbers of immigrants arrived in
Minneapolis, Polish Catholics requested that Bishop Ireland establish
a Polish parish in Northeast Minneapolis, which took place in 1886.
The cornerstone for the present edifice designed by Polish architect Victor Cordella was laid
on July 4, 1927. It was dedicated by Archbishop Dowling on September 16, 1928.
Holy Cross is a stately basilica style church featuring abundant stained-glass, statues and side altars including
many Polish saints and figures, a rose window over the organ loft, a breathtaking sanctuary
with its Minnesota granite pillars and altars of Italian marble and altarpiece of the Crucifixion.
Today, nestled in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District, Holy Cross is an active multi-campus
parish encompassing three historic churches: Holy Cross, St. Clement and St. Hedwig. The
parish is a spiritual home for the Polish Community from the greater Twin Cities area and many others.
