Statement Regarding Notices of Claims

From Bishop Andrew Cozzens, Auxiliary Bishop

Jeff Anderson and Associates has posted on its website information about Notices of Claims served on the Archdiocese. A Notice of Claim is not the same as a lawsuit, but puts the receiving party on notice of a potential lawsuit. The information on the Jeff Anderson and Associates website contains the names of priests, brothers and lay people against whom an accusation of sexual abuse of a minor has been made in the past.  Our hope is that the posting of these names will encourage those abused by clergy to come forward not only to file claims but also for assistance in healing.

These accusations in the Notices of Claims relate to reported conduct that, in most cases, occurred several decades ago. The priests on this list are deceased, permanently out of public ministry, on leave from ministry or on restricted ministry while the claim is being investigated. Some names have already been posted on our website because the Archdiocese has determined that claims alleging sexual abuse of a minor are substantiated.
