54-Day Novena

In the Catholic tradition, a 54-day Rosary novena begins August 15 (Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary) and ends October 7 (Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary). Join in praying the Rosary daily! Archdiocesan Synod 2022 – This Present Moment

Archbishop Bernard Hebda: Having reviewed your comments, I am now pleased to announce that the 2022 Archdiocesan Synod will focus on three areas: 1) Forming parishes that are in the service of evangelization; 2) Forming missionary disciples who know Jesus’s love and respond to his call; and 3) Forming youth and young adults in and for a Church that is always young.

U.S. Bishops’ President and International Justice and Peace Chairman Join in Solidarity with the Suffering of Lebanon After Explosion in the Port of Beirut

Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and Bishop David J. Malloy of Rockford and chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on International Justice and Peace, issued the following statement in solidarity with Lebanon after the explosion in the Port of Beirut:

Statement Regarding Retirement of the Most Rev. John LeVoir

Hebda: Given the significant health challenges that Bishop John LeVoir has been experiencing and addressing, I was pleased to learn that our Holy Father, Pope Francis, had granted his request to be relieved of his responsibilities as Bishop of New Ulm and to begin his well-deserved retirement.  

Statement Regarding Rev. Timothy Dolan

From Archbishop Bernard A. Hebda: Father Timothy Dolan has been authorized to return to ministry in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.

Ministry Leaders to Examine Catholic Church’s Engagement with Young People

On Saturday, July 25, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Cultural Diversity in the Church, in collaboration with other offices at the USCCB and joined by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry (NFYCM), will convene a yearlong intercultural process with young adults and ministry leaders.

Optional Memorial: Blessed James Miller, Martyr, February 13

Archbishop Bernard Hebda has received permission from the Vatican to include the feast day (February 13) of Blessed James Miller, Martyr, in the Archdiocesan liturgical calendar. It will occupy the rank of optional memorial and its liturgical color is red.

Additional Statement Regarding David Haas

From Tim O’Malley, Director of Ministerial Standards and Safe Environment: Since my June 16, 2020 statement, the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis has received additional reports from women in different parts of the country alleging that David Haas engaged in inappropriate conduct with them in the 1980s, when the women were young adults.

USCCB Chairmen Welcome Supreme Court Decision Preserving the Religious Liberty of Little Sisters

The Little Sisters of the Poor recently went to the Supreme Court of the United States again to defend their community against attempts to force Catholic religious to cooperate with immoral activities, and again, the Supreme Court has recognized their right to religious freedom. By a vote of 7-2, the Court ruled in favor of the Little Sisters.

A Prayer for an End to the Sin of Racism

The Interim Commission for Consecrated Life in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis has designed this prayer for use by parishes at weekend liturgies. The prayer can be downloaded in various versions.

The Catholic Spirit wins 10 Catholic Press Association awards

The Catholic Spirit won 10 awards from the Catholic Press Association for its work in 2019, including three first place awards for design, news reporting and the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis’ new website.

2020 Leading With Faith Awards Suspended

Due to complications caused by COVID-19, The Catholic Spirit has made the difficult decision to suspend the 2020 Leading With Faith Awards. All 2020 nominees will be considered for the 2021 Leading With Faith Awards.

Statement Regarding David Haas

From Tim O'Malley, Director of Ministerial Standards and Safe Environment:  As stated in a June 14, 2020 response to Catholic News Agency, in 2018 the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis received two reports from another diocese that David Haas acted inappropriately with two adult women at an event in another state.

President of U.S. Bishops’ Conference Issues Statement on Supreme Court Decision on Legal Definition of “Sex” in Civil Rights Law

Archbishop Gomez: I am deeply concerned that the U.S. Supreme Court has effectively redefined the legal meaning of ‘sex’ in our nation’s civil rights law. This is an injustice that will have implications in many areas of life.
