The Minnesota Catholic Conference, in collaboration with other religious communities and school advocates, proposes strengthening the Safe Schools Program by creating a consistent school safety funding stream of $100 per student for all students, irrespective of where they attend school—public, charter, nonpublic, or tribal.

While the extraordinary challenges of our times generally rule our news feeds—particularly in recent weeks—I find hope in the resilience and faith of our brothers and sisters overcoming tragedy.

World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10, and the Catholic Church marks the Jubilee of Consolation on September 15. In recognition of the continuing mental health crisis, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has announced a new component within the ongoing National Catholic Mental Health Campaign focused on amplifying local engagement on mental health.

Reacting to the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act by the U.S. Congress, Archbishop Timothy P. Going way back to my days as an elementary school student, I would always get a little melancholic on the last day of June. I would wait the whole school year for summer to come, and the last day of June would signal to me that one of our three Pittsburgh summer months was already over. Ask your members of Congress to insist that the administration reverse the terminations of Catholic Relief Services’ Food for Progress and McGovern-Dole Food for Education programs, to continue lifesaving and life-affirming food aid.

Catholic and other nonpublic schools serve the common good, and our students deserve access to the support they need to succeed. Let’s make sure our leaders follow through on their commitment.

My suspicion is that many of you, like me, had your eyes glued to the screen last Thursday as the Vatican livestream introduced us to our newly elected pope, Leo XIV.
